QS Weekly Measurement System / COINS Integration
Bardsley Construction Ltd are a large privately owned construction company involved in major projects throughout the UK.
One of the primary areas within this business that is internal to its smooth running is Quantity Surveying.
A key attribute of construction is Quantity Surveying or, measuring the amount of labour on a site together with materials/resources used. It is the job of a Quantity Surveyor to inspect a construction site and liaise with on site labour teams to establish such information in order to:
- Determine how much materials are being used on the project
- Determine the wages due to onsite labour teams and subcontractors
The information collected would need to be translated into a format that could be used by:
- Accounts Payable: Information such as "hours worked" would be used to calculate wages for onsite labour teams.
- Internal Computer System: A large internal system exists within the company designed to bring together computerised aspects of the construction industry into a common centralised framework. This system is called COINS. The system maintains a number of ledgers that hold the exact expenditure on a given project, recording to a limited amount of detail the amount of expenditure in an area of a given project.
The surveyor's team had no electronic means of recording the data collected from construction sites, only a paper based system and a collection of manual procedures for calculating amounts.
We were commissioned by the site surveyor's team in the company to consult on the problem of recording site survey data in an electronic format that would enable the effective storage and retrieval of data for future use and analysis.
We developed a system which could accept the measurement data acquired from each of the sites and store the data in a central database. Additional components were built onto the system to permit the importing and exporting of data via special data files and we also consulted on the development of reports using Crystal Reports (by Business Objects) to report on the data.
